Geto Suguru Legacy in Jujutsu Kaisen Manga
Suguru Geto, also known as Getō Suguru, is an antagonist in both the Jujutsu Kaisen series and its prequel, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High. He initially attended Tokyo Jujutsu High as a student under Masamichi Yaga, alongside Satoru Gojo and Shoko Ieiri. However, his experiences as a jujutsu sorcerer instilled in him a deep hatred for non-sorcerers, culminating in an incident where Suguru massacred over a hundred civilians in a single night. As a result, he was expelled from Jujutsu High and gained infamy as one of the most dangerous curse users.
Appearance:
Suguru is a tall, slender, and muscular man characterized by his long black hair, partly tied up in a man bun with the rest cascading down his back. He has thin black eyes, and his bangs occasionally cover his left eye. Notably, he has large earlobes that accommodate sizable circular earrings. During his time as a student, Suguru’s hair was shorter, mostly tied up, but his prominent bangs remained. Following his transformation into a curse user in August 2007, his hair gradually grew longer, reaching its length by 2017.
As a student, Suguru wore the standard Jujutsu High uniform. When assuming the guise of a Buddhist priest, he dresses accordingly, donning a gold-colored kāṣāya garment over black yukata robes. Completing his monk attire are white tabi socks and zōri sandals.
Personality:
Baro’s self-perception as “the King” shapes his imperious personality, leading him to view himself as superior to others and maintain an arrogant and selfish attitude. He sees everyone else on the field as merely supporting roles, with himself as the main actor. Despite his obsession with pursuing soccer, he lacks genuine passion for the sport. Instead, Baro is driven by a desire to assert dominance over others on the field, using his goals to elevate himself above them. He takes pleasure in replacing other players as the main actor, believing this satisfaction is reserved for the strong. Baro is the type of player who refuses to pass the ball and relentlessly seeks to regain possession or score whenever he loses it.
In contrast, Suguru showed genuine care for his fellow curse users, considering his commanders as family. They admired him for prioritizing sorcerers as a community and hoped he would become the leader of the jujutsu world. Suguru maintained politeness towards other jujutsu sorcerers, often through his deceptive personas. For instance, he pretended to befriend Yuta Okkotsu while secretly planning to kill him later. Additionally, he insulted one of Yuta’s friends shortly after showing a friendly demeanor towards them.
Suguru conveyed to Yuta that jujutsu sorcerers exist within a paradox where the weaker individuals hold power over the stronger ones. He explained that sorcerers live to serve non-sorcerers, often without receiving gratitude. According to Suguru, humanity has impeded its own evolution, and to ensure survival and completely eliminate curses, humanity must transition into a world inhabited solely by sorcerers by eliminating all non-sorcerers.
After defeating Yuta’s classmates, Suguru was moved to tears and expressed his joy at witnessing young sorcerers banding together to protect each other. With a frenzied grin, Suguru exclaimed that it was the kind of world he had yearned for. Although he claimed he didn’t wish to kill Yuta, he believed it was necessary for the realization of his vision for the future.
During his confrontation with Yuta, Suguru criticized humanity’s creation of the concept of gods, arguing that sorcerers already embodied superior beings. He viewed humans as reluctant to acknowledge the existence of more powerful entities and was repulsed by their arrogant attitudes. Following this encounter, Satoru confronted his former best friend and admitted that he trusted Suguru enough not to extinguish the potential of young sorcerers.
In his final moments, Suguru confided in Satoru that he couldn’t find happiness in the world, reminiscing about their time together at Jujutsu High. He even expressed that Satoru should have cursed him in the end. Despite everything that transpired, Suguru acknowledged that a bond still existed between them.
As students of jujutsu alongside his best friend Satoru, Suguru initially believed that jujutsu sorcerers existed to protect non-sorcerers. However, Satoru disagreed, arguing that Suguru shouldn’t pride himself on being righteous, and applying logic to jujutsu was foolish. Their conflicting ideologies led to arguments and clashes during their youth.
Suguru was a much more kind and proper young man back then, especially compared to Satoru. He understood the importance of manners and carrying himself with dignity as a jujutsu sorcerer. Satoru had far too rude of an attitude in his opinion.Despite disagreeing from time to time, Suguru and Satoru were still best friends. They encouraged each other to be the strongest and were confident they could accomplish anything as long as they had each other.
However, following Riko Amanai’s death, things began to change. The followers of the Star Religious Group applauded her death, a deplorable action that stayed with Suguru. He decided not to kill them because there needs to be a reason for jujutsu sorcerers to kill.
As time passed, Suguru struggled to maintain his ideology, finding his path increasingly uncertain. While Satoru rose to become the strongest on his own, Suguru embarked on more perilous missions solo. He felt trapped in a relentless cycle of exorcism and consumption. Eventually, he began questioning whom he was performing these gruesome acts for, recalling the non-sorcerers from the Star Religious Group. Witnessing a disturbing evil that day, he still chose to protect them, a decision he later regrets. Reflecting on the memory, Suguru refers to them as “monkeys” for the first time, expressing his remorse.
During a conversation with Yuki Tsukumo, Suguru learned that non-sorcerers are the primary source of cursed energy, as it flows more freely from them compared to normal sorcerers. Yuki proposed two options: eradicating cursed energy from humanity altogether or teaching everyone how to control it. Suguru, however, devised a third solution: eliminating all non-sorcerers.
When Yuki asked Suguru if he harbored hatred towards non-sorcerers, he struggled to provide an answer. He admitted that he once believed in protecting them but began to doubt their worthiness of his efforts. Unable to discern the value from the ugliness of the weak, Suguru likened being a jujutsu sorcerer to running a marathon with an unclear finish line. Yuki urged him to choose between embracing his dedication to being a jujutsu sorcerer or succumbing to the contempt he held towards non-sorcerers.
After the tragic loss of his enthusiastic junior, Yu Haibara, Suguru, feeling uncertain, reconsidered his view of being a jujutsu sorcerer. He likened it to a marathon with the end of the road leading to a mountain made of his fellow sorcerers’ corpses. During a subsequent mission, Suguru encountered two young girls mistreated by non-sorcerers due to their curse-related abilities.
In that critical moment, Suguru made a definitive choice. He rescued the girls, Mimiko and Nanako Hasaba, and took the lives of all one hundred and twelve residents of the village. This marked his official transition into a curse user, symbolized by leaving his Jujutsu High pin behind. Suguru embraced his true nature, declaring his disdain for non-sorcerers and committing himself to fighting for a world inhabited solely by sorcerers.
Overall Skill Level:
Suguru Geto was among the elite special grade sorcerers, recognized as one of the most dangerous curse users humanity faced. During his time as a student, both Suguru and Satoru were regarded as “the strongest.” Suguru demonstrated remarkable proficiency by effortlessly defeating experienced curse users on multiple occasions. His arsenal of cursed spirits was extensive, encompassing a diverse range of abilities suited for various roles in battle. Notably, Suguru displayed versatility by excelling in close-quarters combat in addition to utilizing his curses.
During his tenure as a curse user, Suguru employed his religious group as bait to amass thousands of cursed spirits. Over the span of a decade, he emerged as a greater threat to humanity than any individual curse at the time. Backed by thousands of curses and supported by several curse users, Suguru amassed enough power to initiate a conflict with Jujutsu High, the linchpin of the jujutsu community.
Recognizing the formidable strength of Jujutsu High, Suguru understood that his chances of defeating all the sorcerers were slim. However, his strategic acumen enabled him to deceive them and isolate Yuta Okkotsu within the school. The true objective of the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons was to eliminate Yuta and seize the special grade vengeful spirit, Rika Orimoto, from him. Had his curses not been divided between Kyoto and Shinjuku, Suguru might have achieved success in his mission.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant:
Contrary to his opponents’ expectations, Suguru doesn’t solely rely on his cursed spirits in battle. Instead, he capitalizes on their misconception, using his expertise in martial arts to catch them off guard. Suguru’s hand-to-hand combat skills are exemplary, enabling him to deliver a barrage of punches, palm strikes, and forceful chops capable of incapacitating his adversaries.
In one instance, Suguru allowed an armed curse user to approach him, only to unleash a flurry of devastating blows, leaving them bloodied and incapacitated. Even against formidable opponents like Panda, known for their proficiency in close-quarters combat, Suguru demonstrated superiority in physical exchanges.
Armed with Playful Cloud, Suguru engaged both Yuta and Rika in close combat simultaneously. Despite facing two opponents, he deftly parried Yuta’s sword strikes and Rika’s physical assaults with masterful skill, effectively keeping both adversaries at bay.
Great Tactical Intellect:
Suguru Geto’s brilliance was evident during his time at Jujutsu High, where he consistently demonstrated exceptional memory and understanding of mission details, often guiding his colleague Satoru in key aspects. His sharp intellect extended seamlessly to combat scenarios, allowing him to outmaneuver opponents by staying several steps ahead of them.
In one instance, Suguru faced an older and more experienced curse user who attempted to outmaneuver him, only to fall into Suguru’s carefully laid trap. During his confrontation with Toji Fushiguro, Suguru employed strategic deception to momentarily catch the Sorcerer Killer off guard. Recognizing Toji’s confidence, Suguru exploited this by maneuvering behind him, intending to sever his weapons supply by absorbing the inventory curse. However, unforeseen circumstances led to this plan backfiring, leaving Suguru vulnerable to exploitation at close range. Despite the setback, this encounter showcased Suguru’s tactical prowess and ability to adapt in the heat of battle.
After becoming a curse user, Suguru swiftly seized control of the remnants of the Time Vessel Association and similar religious groups. This acquisition provided him with a legitimate base of operations for cursed humans seeking exorcisms, allowing Suguru to absorb their curses or exploit them for financial gain. Through this method, Suguru amassed thousands of curses over time.
Utilizing the resources accumulated through strategic maneuvers, Suguru orchestrated a bold move against the entire Jujutsu High sorcerer community. The Night Parade of a Hundred Demons served as a declaration of war on Jujutsu High, enticing all their sorcerers to Kyoto and Shinjuku. Simultaneously, Suguru infiltrated Jujutsu High with the intention of confronting Yuta Okkotsu directly. Despite initially facing less than a twenty percent chance of victory, Suguru confidently calculated that capturing Rika would significantly increase his chances of success.
